Studio Project – Westlake Urban Gateway

Westlake Urban Gateway is a proposal for a mixed use development located above the Westlake/MacArthur Park Metro stop. The project is located across the street from MacArthur Park, in Los Angeles, CA. The Parti was that of the void. This void served as the organizing method for the retail ground floor.

The apartments were organized around a central void. Each apartment had its own outdoor living space outside its front door. By moving this outdoor space across the corridors, it allows more light to the planters and fosters a more social- and community-driven atmosphere. The unit section below explores the private/semi-private relationship of the units.

The two bedroom units are 1,000 sq. ft. as set-forth in the initial program. Split into two levels, the first floor contains the outdoor semi-private space, along with the dining area and one bedroom. The second floor has a private living room, one bedroom, and a balcony looking down into the retail void.

The one bedroom loft style apartments are 750 sq. ft. with dining/living on the first floor and the bedroom on the second.
